[ANNOUNCE] Lightswitch for Open Source Automation OSAE

Postby Melloware » Sat Feb 11, 2012 8:11 am

Dan Bemowski has created a Lightswitch plugin for the Open Source Automation project found here:

http://www.opensourceautomation.com

This project has been created with the sole purpose to make home automation available to everyone. Currently there are many home automation programs on the market, but they are all very expensive. This makes it difficult for the average user to set up a professional home automation system without taking out a second mortgage. On top of the cost, these programs are very restrictive. Users are forced to use only the hardware that is supported and without an open extendable architecture they are at the mercy of the software company to develop new interfaces.

The Open Source Automation project overcomes these two major problems with the home automation software industry. First and foremost, OSA is free and open source. Anyone with an internet connection can download, install and get up and running without spending a dime. Even more exciting is the open extendability of OSA. Anyone can use the open source API included with OSA to develop new plug-ins and expand the functionality of the system. With the openness and community focused vision the development of new and exciting plug-ins is sure to push the limits of the imagination.

Yes I think the whole Open Source Automation project is all .NET so all the plugins are .NET.

I have made some updates to the Lightswitch plugin for OSA to better support thermostats. Thermostats were not previously supported due to the fact that standards were not in place for them in OSA. I have updated my RCS-TR40 thermostat plugin to conform to these standards and used it as a base for testing the functionality in the Lightswitch plugin. I was informed that not all of the thermostat plugins for OSA have been updated to the standards, so if you have one of the other thermostats and are using OSA, you may want to message the plugin author and inform them that you need this updated. I have also created a wiki page outlining the setup and configuration of the Lightswitch plugin for OSA. This can be found here http://www.opensourceautomation.com/wiki/index.php?title=Lightswitch_Server.

If you have any questions or suggestions on this, feel free to drop me (dbemowsk) a PM in the OSA forums.
