Kwikset 99100 Lock

Postby jamesbraddy » Mon Aug 13, 2012 10:19 pm

Anyone fooled with sending lock commands from z-wave commander? Leviton Thinkware doesn't support lock commands natively so looking to see if it would be feasible to build the set in z-wave commander/server app XML file.

Open Zwave Might support it and this app zVirtualScenes uses Open Zwave and supports Zwave Commander/Lightswitch.

Leviton has no plans on adding Lock support to ThinkStick.

So the recommendation here is to scrap leviton essentials if I want lock control. I'm good with that but unreal that leviton would want to mis out here. Is the control thinkstick compatible with zVS?

I'm also assuming it is not feasible to write some software code into z-wave commander/server to retrofit the lock control if the suggestion is to entertain zVirtualScenes? Is it money, and if so how much will it take?

I'I really hate to break up something that has worked out so good for all of my other needs. The Leviton Essentials with Z-Wave Commander/SVR has really worked well for me over the last few years.

1. So lock control is actually embedded both in the firmware on the Zwave stick and in the API from Leviton. There API does not have lock support and neither does the THinkStick firmware. So even if I could write something that controlled locks the ThinkStick does not and probably will never have Lock support.

2. OpenZwave and zVirtualScenes will work with the ThinkStick, but I am not sure it will support locks might want to ask the author. I know zVirtualScenes recommends the Aeon Z-Stick which is a very powerful and flexible USB Stick.

Think Essentials 2.5.5.0 has some level of lock support built in. see note build note:
- Added security devices support, security devices can only be included and programmed for association. The actual controls need to be carried out through VRCOP or other third party devices. (only some locks from Yale, Kwikset and Schalge had been tested) - http://www.controlthink.com/thinkessentials/update_2_5_5_0.html Think Essentials now actually pairs and recognizes my lock but doesn't send commands???

Why the heck hasn't someone wrote code for ThinkStick or Aeon that will support these locks? Not sure why Leviton has half a$$ed it here. I would have it written today if I knew who to call.

Yep but that ThinkStick code is only in ThinkEssentials they did not release a new API for developers to get at that. And also just for associations doesn't do you any good, I am assuming you want to actual lock and unlock your door!

From what I understand when the Lock spec came out companies were looking to capitlize on forcing you to have a subscription to their service to use the remote lock feature. Plus they had to add security and encryption to the Zwave protocol (so people don't unlock your house just by sniffing traffic), however that has caused slow and proprietary adoption of the Zwave Locks.

I know it stinks!

The only devices I know that handle locks well is the Micasa verde.

Yes that is a bummer..Someone would still have to get past the Dog, Alarm System, Nosy Neighbors, Security Cameras, Smith and Wesson all after they drive to my house, sniff RF traffic and decode my lock communications. My bet is that they have much better things to do with their time anyway rather than toggle the locks. I would be more pissed off at them messing with my Air Conditioner today.

All I want to do is work the darn lock I paid $200 bucks for.

Really, do I have to buy MiCasa or Homeseer? I refuse.

The only other thing I know of is Schlage was offering Zwave Locks but they wanted 10$ a month for you to use their Schlage Anywhere service or something like that. Total ripoff.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I was doing some googleing and came across this one. I figured I'd post some info just in case it's helpful to anyone else.

I had been waiting on open zwave for years to get the promised lock support but it never happened - seems that the security protocols used by the lock are harder to crack than they (openzwave folks) expected. So instead, I use InControl Home Automation (www.incontrolzwave.com). It's still a paid product, but quite inexpensive next to homeseer. My lock works with my Aeon Labs ZStick and is controllable from my Android with no monthly subscription.
