X10 commander and the insteon hub

Postby grahamk » Sat Dec 06, 2014 12:20 pm

HI -

We have been using X10 commander with great luck for a few years now. Recently I decided that it is probably time to move away from X10 and go to insteon.

This creates some problems for me with some programs i have written that use X10 extensively, and would also make X10 commander obsolete for us, which is a significant downside.

I found this page:

It describes how X10 commands can be sent to an insteon hub via http. I plan to use this functionality to adapt my X10 programming to work with the insteon hub. I'm curious if you have ever considered doing the same type of thing with X10 commander. It seems it might be fairly easy to modify the code to send http calls instead of the plc calls that require X10 libraries.

Just a thought. :-)

I have not looked into Insteon much as I myself have upgraded to using Zwave in my house.

I can look into it though but since I don't own one of these devices I would hesitant to try and program something I can test myself.

What you might consider is writing a little program that cuts our X10 Commander Server out of the picture and basically handles the Android/iPhoen client and sends commands to the Insteon Hub. It is just a simple TCP protocol on Port 6003 to fake being the X10 Commander Server.

It is not exactly like this but it is very similar to our Lightswitch API. Basically you just telnet to 6003.
