Sharing COM ports for CM11 and CM17

Postby Melloware » Fri May 01, 2009 10:03 pm

As many of you know a limitation of COM ports is that only one application may use a COM port at a time. So if you use mControl and want to use X10 Commander with your CM11 it will give you an error (win error 5) meaning the Port is already in use. This does NOT affect the CM15 USB based X10 controller as it does not have this limitation.

There are a couple of software solutions to help with the problem of sharing COM ports.

XPort:

Serial Splitter:

I have dowloaded the X10 Commander app today.

My issue is that I run Homeseer, an X10 program that comunicates via a CM11/CM12 from my Com port. Consequently I can not run both Homeseer and X10 Commander at the same time which I need too.

I have tried the free serial spliter software from http://curioustech.home.insightbb.com/xport.html which does not seem to want to work on my PC.

Can you help?

Many thanks

Unfortunately this is a huge drawback of Serial port devices which is why most PC manufacturers have phased them out in favor of USB. I know that sucks, but the CM11 was invented back in 1996 and hasn't changed since.

So if the Serial Splitter didn't work then you can only have 1 application use the COM port at a time. What some people do in your situation is buy a CM15 USB PC Controller to use with X10 Commander and Homeseer since both can access the USB port at the same time unlike the old CM11's.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the CM15 does not work with the Homeseer software. Do you have any other suggestions?

I have no other suggestions. This is the nature of Serial Port based devices...they only allow ONE app to access the Serial Port at a time.

I am using a USB connection to the CM11/CM12 and I still get the same message.

Yes but it is a Serial-To-USB adapter right? That is actually still just a serial connection.

I have over come the issue by using 2 CM11/CM12. One for the Homeseer software and one for the X10 Comander. :D

I have encountered the same problem, that Homeseer and X10 Commander can't share the same Serial Port.
I have another CM11a Adapter, that I'm thinking of Using.
If I understand here the X10 Commander Software can use one CM11a Interface,
While Homeseer can use the other CM11a Interface..

Can Anyone tell me this will work.. ?

Thanks..

I believe that will work. Or you can try there is a post here allowing Shared Com port using software but I can't guarantee that will work either.

Your other option is a USB CM15A to use with X10 Commander and leave your CM11 for Homeseer.

Thank you.. Unfortunately I'm running an older version of Homeseer that's not compatible with the CM15,
So I'm going to test using two CM11a serial inrerfaces.
One will be configured to Homeseer, the other CM11a will be configured to X10 Commander.
That should resolved the limitation of two devices sharing a serial port.
Thank you for your suggestions..
