[SOLVED] iPhone does not connect using host name

Postby davidpmays » Fri Sep 02, 2011 2:22 pm

I have used my iPhone connected to my MediaCenter under XP. After upgrading to Windows 7 I can no longer connect.
I can use Safari on the iPhone and connect to port 80
I can use putty on my laptop and connect to port 6000 using the host name mediacenter or the ip address
using the iPhone app with a specific ip address and port 6000 works.
using the iPhone with the computer names yields the message on my iPhone Server Error - Server disconnected. Check host mediacenter ...
I can see mediacenter in my network browser from my laptop.
I have a cable modem and it changes my ip address every few weeks causing me to constantly look up the ip address and type it in.

Any ideas?
Thanks

It is your Firewall. Go into youu Control Panel -> Firewall settings in Windows 7 and allow Intelliremote as an exception and add Port 6000 as an exception and restart Intelliremote.

Already have that setup in the firewall. It seems like the iPhone is unable to determine the IP address from the network name. Please note, if I type in the address intelliremote works. It doesn't seem like something on the host, though it may be, it seems like something on the iPhone.

Oh wait I am confused. So if in the Intelliremote settings on the iphone you put in 192.XXX.XXX.XXX it works but if you try and use your host name like "MyPC" it does not?

Correct! "192.168.0.18" works "MediaCenter" does NOT work.

That is because the way the network names resolve. "MediaCenter" is a Windows NT centric host name. The Apple iPhone knows nothing about Windows network names. So I don't believe that will ever work.
